How does WMBC help the community?
The WMBC is a nonprofit club which aims to encourage the community to get out and enjoy the spaces around Waiheke Island whilst exercising the body. The club works closely with Waiheke Island Parks Officer Gary Wilton and the Auckland City Council, which has provided funding and support for the development of the tracks at the Onetangi Sports Park, including the planting of over 150 native trees which have been landscape into the family track.
The trail network development initiative has provided members of the community opportunities to learn not only skills associated with mountain biking, such as bicycle maintenance and competitive racing, but also in fields as diverse as ecology, landscape design, and engineering, as trails have been integrated into diverse landscapes.
Moving forward, we intend to continue development of a 1st-class single-track environment which will enthuse and delight as many people as possible – both visitors to the island and members of the local community. Working with diverse stakeholder organisations such as Auckland City Council, Cycle Action Network, and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority, we plan to develop more riding areas on the island, which will integrate with and complement proposed wide-area cycleways on Waiheke.
